How children can take part this summer

The annual challenge, delivered by The Reading Agency in partnership with libraries, asks children to keep reading over the school summer holidays while collecting rewards along the way.

Children can sign up for free at their local North Northamptonshire library. They will receive a sticker collector card, while children taking part in the main challenge will also receive a Read to the Beat StoryTime magazine.

The main aim is simple: read six books over the summer. For each book read, participants collect stickers, building towards a certificate and medal when they complete the challenge. Children taking part in the preschool mini challenge can receive a special finisher sticker.

The programme has been running for more than 25 years nationally and is designed to support reading for pleasure during the long school break, when many families are looking for free activities that also help children stay confident with books outside the classroom.

Families elsewhere in England are also being offered similar library schemes this summer, including a free Read to the Beat challenge in Derby and a library reading challenge in Cheshire West.

Read to the Beat brings music into the library

This year’s Read to the Beat theme links reading with music, rhythm, sound and culture. Developed in partnership with Universal Music Group UK, the theme encourages children to explore stories that connect with creativity and storytelling through music.

In North Northamptonshire, the challenge is also tied to free library activities across the summer. The council says families can expect events such as drumming workshops, silent discos, storytelling sessions and make-your-own-instrument workshops at local branches.

Children taking part in the main challenge will also be able to try 12 optional individualised challenges. These are designed to give readers more ways to stay engaged beyond simply finishing books, with additional rewards available.

Local libraries are being used as the main access point for the programme, so families do not need to book through a separate system based on the information released. The source material directs parents and carers to ask at their local branch or use the council’s libraries information for event listings.

Kettering Library has a different start date

Most North Northamptonshire libraries will launch the challenge on Saturday 4 July. Kettering Library is the exception because it will be temporarily closed on Friday 3 July and Saturday 4 July.

Families using Kettering Library can sign up from Monday 6 July. The branch team will also hold a “super sign-up Saturday” on 11 July.

That difference matters for families planning to start on launch weekend. Children in the Kettering area will still be able to take part in the full summer challenge, but they should use the later local sign-up dates confirmed for that branch.

What to do next

Families can visit a local North Northamptonshire library from Saturday 4 July to join the Summer Reading Challenge 2026: Read to the Beat. Kettering Library sign-up starts from Monday 6 July because of the two-day closure.

Children who complete the main challenge receive a certificate and medal. Preschool children completing the mini challenge receive a special finisher sticker, and the Summer Reading Challenge is also included in this year’s Movement and Xplorer Journal, available from local libraries.
