Plymouth’s Big Green Trail brings free family day out

Families following stamp stops through Central Park will be able to try nature crafts, cycling challenges, river games and creative workshops when The Big Green Trail returns to Plymouth on Saturday 20 June.

The free community festival runs from 10am to 3pm in Central Park. It is open to families, residents and people of all ages, with no booking required.

Led by Climate Connections, a Plymouth City Council project, the event brings local organisations together around nature, creativity, practical climate action and outdoor activity. Visitors can move around the park at their own pace, using a Big Green Trail activity pack to collect stamps at different stops.

Free activities across Central Park

The Big Green Trail is designed as a loose route rather than a seated event, with activity points dotted across Central Park.

Westcountry Rivers Trust will host an inflatable obstacle course linked to how rivers work. National Trust and Green Communities will offer nature crafts, wildlife identification and guided walks, while Plymouth Sound National Marine Park and Ocean Conservation Trust will bring marine games and ocean artefacts.

Local conservation groups will also be represented. RSPB, Devon Wildlife Trust and Dartmoor Zoo are among the organisations due to help visitors learn more about wildlife and conservation.

For families looking for hands-on creative stops, Climate Action Plymouth will run Haikus for Hope. Plymouth Scrapstore and Sewcial Guild’s Sew on the Road will focus on reuse and making.

Bikes, energy advice and local climate stories

The programme also includes practical activities connected to everyday climate action. Dr Bike will offer a free bike service and safety check, while local transport organisations will run playful cycling challenges.

Plymouth Energy Community and Eljay Energy will use interactive games to share renewable energy and home advice.

The event will also feature the Local Climate Legend Living Room, where visitors can watch short films and hear stories about residents, community groups and organisations taking environmental action across Plymouth.

Tom Briars-Delve, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said The Big Green Trail was a way for people of all ages to get outdoors and learn about small changes that can help protect the environment.
