Shape the future of Ealing schools as a volunteer governor
Residents in Ealing have a unique opportunity to influence the direction of local education by joining school governing boards. Ealing Council is actively seeking volunteers to bring fresh perspectives and professional skills to schools across the borough, helping to ensure every child receives a fair start in life.
Strategic oversight versus daily management
School governors do not handle the day-to-day operations of a school. Instead, they operate at a strategic level, supporting and challenging school leaders to ensure resources are used effectively and educational standards remain high. The role involves setting priorities and acting as a “critical friend” to the headteacher and staff.
Stephanie Leane, a School Governor at Springhallow School in West Ealing, joined the board to give back to her community. She notes that the role is less about enforcing rules and more about being disciplined and asking the right questions. Volunteers are not expected to be experts immediately; the process involves gradual learning and observing change over time rather than expecting instant results.

Skills and commitment required for the role
To become a governor, residents must possess a passion for improving the chances of young people and a willingness to learn. Adam Nazar-Bhandari, who has served as a governor since 2009 and currently chairs the board at Perivale Primary School, explains that curiosity is a vital trait. Governors must be prepared to question and analyse data to ensure every decision is impact-led and benefits the pupils.
While the role is voluntary, the impact on the local community is significant. It offers a way to influence how young people develop and ensures that schools remain accountable to the families they serve.

Free online information session on June 11
Ealing Council is hosting a virtual event to help prospective volunteers understand the commitment. The session takes place on Thursday, June 11, from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. Attendees will have the chance to hear about the specific duties involved and the training and support provided to new governors.
Registration for the online event is free. Those unable to attend but interested in the role can contact the council’s governor services directly by emailing [email protected] to find out more about current vacancies in the borough.
