A week for unpaid and family carers in Shropshire

Carers Week is an annual campaign focused on raising awareness of unpaid caring and helping people recognise when the support they give to a family member or friend means they are a carer.

This year’s local programme is aimed at unpaid and family carers in Shropshire. The council says its carers support team has organised events and competitions to recognise carers in the community and give them a chance to take time away from their caring role.

The 2026 theme is Building Carer Friendly Communities, with the campaign looking at how local support networks can make a lasting difference to unpaid carers’ lives.

Shropshire Council said the week is also intended to help people who may not describe themselves as carers to identify their role and access support earlier.

Dates, locations and booking details

Carers Week 2026 in Shropshire runs from Sunday 7 June to Sunday 14 June. The programme is described as a range of activities across Shropshire, including opportunities to enjoy the Shropshire countryside, connect with other carers, and take part in activities designed around fun and relaxation.

Specific venue addresses and activity times were not included in the notice, so carers should check the council’s programme before travelling or booking.

Activities built around rest, connection and support

The council says the activities are intended to offer carers a break from caring responsibilities, time outdoors in the Shropshire countryside, and a chance to meet others with similar experiences.

The programme also sits alongside the wider public awareness campaign around unpaid care. A carer may be supporting someone with a disability, mental or physical illness, substance misuse issue, or someone who needs extra help as they grow older.

That support can look very different from household to household. For some people it may involve picking up prescriptions, preparing meals or giving emotional support. For others it may mean personal care during the day and night.

Margarete Davies, carer lead and manager of Shropshire Carers, said caring can be rewarding but can also become tiring, frustrating, lonely and isolating. She said early information and help matter because caring responsibilities can affect a carer’s own health and wellbeing.

“We really want to reach out to carers to encourage them to take some time out and take part in our activities,” she said.

Support available through the carers team

Shropshire Council’s carers support team provides information, advice and support for adult carers of adults and young carers across the county.

The council thanked contributors to Carers Week in Shropshire, including the National Garden Scheme, National Trust, Mobilise, Jenna Blair Yoga, Hodnet Hall Gardens, Shropshire Museums, Theatre Severn, Hawkstone Park Follies, The Citadel, Daniels Mill and Highley Severn Centre.

To book a place on any activity in the Carers Week 2026 programme, email shropshire.carers@shropshire.gov.uk or call 01743 341995.
