Hull drivers get one-way relief as Ennerdale works continue

Ennerdale North will reopen to northbound traffic on Friday 31 July after a 10-week closure linked to improvements at the Ennerdale Leisure Centre roundabout. The southbound carriageway will remain closed until mid-September while CityFibre completes fibre-optic connection work.

What changes on Friday 31 July

Drivers will be able to travel northbound between the Thomas Clarkson Way/Ennerdale junction and Littondale. Southbound traffic will still need to follow a diversion, so journeys through Kingswood will continue to require extra planning.

Buses should use:

Sutton Road
Holwell Road
Nidderdale
Littondale

All other traffic should use:

Why the southbound closure is continuing

CityFibre’s contractor has completed the required works that caused the original full closure and is now installing and switching connections to a replacement fibre-optic cable. Hull City Council has agreed to keep the southbound restriction in place so this work can be completed now, avoiding another closure later in the year.

The council says the remaining traffic management is expected to stay in place until mid-September.

Roundabout improvements completed during the closure

The closure also allowed the council’s Hessle-based contractor, CR Reynolds Ltd, to bring forward several parts of the wider scheme. Work completed or progressed includes:

a new surface water drainage system;
a combined kerb drainage system;
a filter drain system;
utility diversions by Yorkshire Water and Northern Power Grid;
kerb tie-in works beside the signalised crossing; and
part of the widening and ground stabilisation on the southbound approach.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure, said the improvements are intended to increase capacity and help reduce congestion as Kingswood continues to grow. Motorists are being encouraged to allow extra time while the southbound restriction remains in place.

The reopening applies to northbound travel only; the southbound diversion remains the key restriction for drivers and bus users through mid-September.
