Pupils at Wanstead High School remain without their promised new classrooms, but the stalled education block has reached a fresh decision point. Redbridge Council says its detailed review of the unfinished building is complete, with the appointment of a contractor to finish the work now the next step.

The council has placed the school block ahead of the wider Wanstead Leisure Centre development. No completion date has been published for either project, but the authority says it wants to prevent the disruption from affecting another school year.

School classrooms now take priority

The immediate objective is to complete the classrooms and facilities that pupils and staff have already been waiting for. Although the leisure centre remains part of the council’s stated plan for the site, work to establish a firm route forward for the education block will come first.

Redbridge Council says it has been working with the school and other stakeholders to reduce the effects of the delay. It has also maintained measures separating the construction site from the school’s daily operations, with health and safety controls remaining in place while the building is unfinished.

For pupils, parents and staff, the practical consequence is continued uncertainty over when the additional school facilities will become available. The council has not provided an opening date in this update, making the promised delivery timetable dependent on the forthcoming contractor decision.

Contractor problems began before insolvency

The previous contractor, Jerram Falkus, entered insolvency before completing the building. Redbridge Council’s account makes clear, however, that it does not consider insolvency to be the sole cause of the delay.

According to the authority, the contractor’s performance during the project and the condition of the work it left behind fell below the expected standards. Those problems were then compounded when the company became insolvent, leaving the council to determine precisely what had been completed and what remained outstanding.

Council leader Kam Rai also acknowledged the authority’s own responsibility. Redbridge Council awarded the contract and oversaw its delivery, meaning the failure cannot be presented simply as an unexpected corporate collapse outside the council’s control.

Site review maps the remaining work

The completed review examined three central issues: which parts of the education block were finished, whether that work met the required standards and what tasks were still outstanding. The council has not published a detailed list of defects or incomplete elements in this statement.

That assessment will inform the selection of a contractor with the expertise, capacity and delivery record required to complete the building. The authority says it wants decisions taken now to protect the school’s long-term interests, even as pressure grows to open the block quickly.

Leisure-centre users remain behind the school timetable

Redbridge Council says it is still committed to delivering Wanstead Leisure Centre and the wider plan for the site. Its sequencing has changed: the leisure facilities will receive renewed attention once progress on the education block is established firmly enough to move forward.

That leaves prospective leisure-centre users without a confirmed construction or opening timetable. The project has not been cancelled, but its progress is now tied closely to resolving the school development.

Contractor decision will unlock the timetable

Once a contractor has been selected, the council has promised a further announcement explaining the next stages and setting out a delivery timetable. Officers have also been asked to create a regular forum where parents, residents and other stakeholders can receive updates, raise questions and give their views directly.

The statement does not yet specify when that forum will begin or how residents can participate. The next verifiable milestone is the council’s confirmation of the contractor, followed by the promised timetable for completing the Wanstead High School education block.
