Major utility works and highway improvements are set to trigger a series of road closures and parking restrictions across Bexley starting late May. These orders, issued by Bexley Council, affect key residential routes in Sidcup, Erith, and Welling, with some projects lasting several months. As Bexley drivers face diversions due to these essential upgrades, residents are advised to plan alternative routes in advance.

Extended water main replacements in Sidcup and Welling

Thames Water is initiating several long-term projects to replace aging water mains. The most significant impact will be felt on The Grove in Sidcup, which will close for its entire length from the High Beeches junction starting May 26. While the order is valid for 18 months, works are expected to conclude within 147 days. Access for residents and emergency vehicles will be maintained, though no general alternative routes are available for this specific stretch.

In Welling, a directional road closure will affect Welling Way at the junction with Bellegrove Road starting May 22. This 18-day project will divert traffic via Shooters Hill and Rochester Way. Additionally, Royal Road and Maylands Drive in Sidcup will see waiting and loading restrictions for approximately 124 days starting June 1 to facilitate further main replacements.

Long-term traffic restrictions for Frinsted Road in Erith

The most extensive project in this cycle involves Frinsted Road in Erith. Starting June 1, Galliford Try will begin installing a new water main on behalf of Thames Water. This work is scheduled to last up to 18 months, involving rolling closures between Beechfield Road, Twigg Close, Stuart Mantle Way, and Birling Road. Diversions will be signposted via Stelling Road and Colyers Lane.

Rapid highway improvements scheduled for late May

Several shorter road closures are planned for council-led highway improvements. These works are designed to be completed quickly to minimize local disruption.

Location Start Date Estimated Duration
Upton Road South area, Bexley 2 June 1 Day
Burnt Oak Lane area, Sidcup 26 May 3 Days
Marlborough Park Avenue area, Sidcup 26 May 3 Days

During the Burnt Oak Lane works, traffic will be diverted via Halfway Street, Days Lane, and Blackfen Road. Access to Rowanwood Avenue will be preserved for local residents.

Major housing and hospitality plans for Sidcup and Erith

Beyond infrastructure, the council has received new planning applications that could change the local landscape. Residents can also view recent conservation area developments affecting Sidcup and surrounding neighborhoods through the online planning portal.

Significant applications include a proposal for the Horse And Groom Public House on Main Road, Sidcup, which seeks to erect two pergolas with external lighting and a new accessible ramp. In Erith, a major development at 106 Bexley Road is seeking to vary conditions for a previously approved 16-apartment complex.

In the Christ Church Conservation Area, homeowners at 5 Priestlands Park Road have submitted plans for a replacement porch and a new internally illuminated structure sign. Residents have 21 days from May 20 to submit observations or objections regarding these proposals to the Development Management team at the Civic Offices in Bexleyheath.
